Over the past few years, Leica Calonox thermal imagers have become proven partners for wildlife observation. Now, the new generation – Leica Calonox 2 has been released and, complete with fresh features, should be upping the thermal game even further.
Wildlife-Watchers.com was invited over to the fabulous, Knepp in the heart of West Sussex to see the new Calonox 2 for ourselves and to see if the new device will win users over with a future-proof technology package of product features.
Lucky enough to be guided on a 'night safari' by the highly knowledgeable staff at Knepp, through Calonox 2 we watched and admired the enormously impressive red deer stag at dusk in among the other red deer, which are free-roaming herbivores at Knepp, and can grow to almost twice the size of Scottish red deer due to the warmer, lusher environment.
Here are some facts and figures for you on the Calonox 2...
Noiseless 'Software based' Shutter
The Leica Calonox 2 features a software based shutter rather than a mechanical one. This, for the first time, allows your image to be recalibrated without delay or noise. In other words, at the moment the thermal image obtained by the Leica Calonox 2 is readjusted or recalibrated, the image no longer “freezes”. As no disturbing mechanical sound is produced, you can watch nature in a relaxed, safe and, above all, inconspicuous manner – without the image freezing.
Revolutionary Shape
The revolutionary shape of the Leica Calonox 2 features a fully-integrated laser rangefinder, which delivers market-leading precision and reliability. This has been appreciated in the Leica Geovid models for decades and, as a result, wildlife watchers now have absolute certainty in identifying and assessing wildlife and its surroundings, even as the long nights draw in.
Superior Image and Detail
Wildlife watchers can count on optimum performance with the Calonox 2. A natural, sharp, high-contrast image is guaranteed by the high-quality sensor in conjunction with the LIO™ (Leica Image Optimisation) software developed by Leica. A mammal or animal with the standard size of 1.8 metres can be clearly found at up to 2,210 metres. We are reliably informed that recognition is possible at 770 metres and reliable identification at 390 metres - impressive. The new Leica Calonox 2 View models are certainly next-generation thermal cameras for wildlife observation – with a clear focus on practical, essential features.
Light and Compact
In line with Leica principles, the light and compact yet rugged construction of the Leica Calonox 2 is a key component of its design. Simultaneously, thanks to their technical features, they are absolutely future-proof. Anyone who picks up the Leica Calonox 2 for the first time will immediately notice the high design standards combined with practical controls, a revolutionary compact shape, and low weight.
The new Leica Calonox 2 is now available to buy from all official Leica stores.
