A captivating and eagerly awaited new book exploring the evolution of dinosaurs through their 150-million-year reign has been released today and is the latest work by renowned palaeontologist Professor Paul M. Barrett.
Paul draws upon his extensive research gained from a 20-plus year career piecing together the history of some of the most fascinating, successful animals to have ever walked the planet. This new release is a testament to his dedication and also an homage to dinosaurs, who were at the top of their game when they were wiped out 66 million years ago.
A History of Dinosaurs in 50 Fossils will allow readers to visually journey through the evolution of dinosaurs. Each fossil is illustrated with photography of original specimens. The book introduces readers to the ancestors of dinosaurs using the Museum’s collections to explore the major dinosaur groups, shedding light on their behaviour as well as key evolutionary events.
Amongst the dinosaurs included is a specimen recently seen in the Museum’s smash hit exhibition Titanosaur: Life as the Biggest Dinosaur and a new species that is still to be named and described. The final chapter delves into the emergence of the first fossil birds, including the legendary Archaeopteryx which you can also see right now in the Museum’s exhibition: Birds, Brilliant & Bizarre.
Professor Paul M. Barrett, Author of A History of Dinosaurs in 50 Fossils says: "This book showcases that palaeontology is an evolving field that uses cutting-edge technology and insights from living species to unlock the secrets of ancient life.
“There’s much to learn, but one thing that is certain is that dinosaurs were thriving before they suddenly went extinct. Within this book is a reminder that even the most dominant species can be vulnerable to sudden catastrophe. In the face of today’s climate and biodiversity crises, we should heed this lesson and work to prevent history from repeating itself.”
This book is the perfect read for all dinosaur-lovers, as well as those looking for a beginner’s crash course in an awe-inspiring evolution dynasty that dominated our planet. It is a thoughtful retelling of how much we have been able to uncover about these dynamic, exciting animals from fossils alone over the past 200 years.
