Japanese manufacturer, Kowa, have become renowned for their exceptional premium spotting scope optics and design, but it's their affordable binocular range which may surprise many, and is possibly best described as a 'dark horse' when it comes to affordable 'mid-range' binoculars.
I took a good look at the Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 wide angle binoculars recently, and here are my thoughts on this model for wildlife observation.
What's in the box?
Optical Performance:
At the heart of any premium binocular lies its optical performance, and the Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 excels in this department. The binoculars boast a 8x magnification coupled with a 32mm objective lens, striking a delicate balance between clarity and portability. The XD (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass ensures exceptional colour accuracy and resolution, mitigating chromatic aberration to deliver stunningly sharp images. The wide-angle field of view is a standout feature, offering a panoramic perspective that enhances the birdwatching experience by capturing more of the surrounding environment.
Build Quality and Design:
Crafted with precision and durability in mind, the Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 are super tough and a testament to Kowa's commitment to quality. The binoculars feature a robust, magnesium alloy chassis that not only provides strength but also keeps the overall weight down. The rubberised armour ensures a secure grip and protection against minor impacts, making them suitable for use in diverse outdoor environments. The compact and lightweight design further enhances the portability of these binoculars, making them an excellent choice for on-the-go wildlife watching adventures.
Ease of Use:
User-friendly design elements make the Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 a joy to use for both seasoned birdwatchers and beginners alike. The centrally located focus wheel is smooth and precise, allowing for quick adjustments to capture fleeting moments in nature. The twist-up eyecups are adjustable, accommodating eyeglass wearers and providing a comfortable viewing experience for extended periods. The diopter adjustment is conveniently located, allowing users to fine-tune the focus to match their individual eyesight.
Low-Light Performance:
For avid wildlife watchers, the dawn chorus and dusk activities are often the most rewarding. The Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 excels in low-light conditions, thanks to its fully multi-coated lenses and large exit pupil. The binoculars gather ample light, ensuring bright and clear images even during the low-light hours. This feature adds a new dimension to wildlife observation, allowing users to appreciate the beauty of nature in various lighting conditions.
Portability and Field Usage:
Weighing in at only 540g, with a real field of view of 8.8 degrees, the Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 is designed for wildlife watchers who appreciate the freedom of movement and large view. The compact size and lightweight construction make these binoculars an ideal companion for hiking trails, bird watching hotspots, and wildlife expeditions. The included neck strap and carrying case further contribute to the convenience of transporting these binoculars, ensuring that they are always within reach when nature beckons.
Verdict:
The Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 Wide Angle Binoculars stand out as a top-tier choice for wildlife observation. They offer exceptional optical performance, durable design, and user-friendly features - making them a valuable asset for nature enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you are a seasoned or casual observer, the Kowa BDII-XD 8x32 is an affordable and savvy 'mid-range' investment.
